ABSTRACT: Currently there is a great concern about deforestation of tropical areas, particularly in the Amazon, and its infl uence on climate. Field experiments have been conducted involving continuous collection of data about CO2 and energy exchange between the land surface and the atmosphere in the Amazon region. However, the measurements obtained by these experiments are generally representative of small areas. This study aims to present and discuss some of the most important models developed to estimate CO2 and energy fl uxes at the surface through satellite data, highlighting the potentialities and limitations for application in the Amazon region. In general, the energy fl ux algorithms make use of images in the visible and infrared (near and thermal) spectrum regions and are based on empirical and physical methods. The observational variables needed as input for these models are air temperature and wind speed, and the largest uncertainties relies on obtaining ground and sensible heat fl uxes. The CO2 fl ux models need images in the visible and near-infrared spectrum regions, being based on the radiation use effi ciency (RUE) concept. The ground measurements needed for these models refers to solar radiation and the biggest challenge is to precisely defi ne the RUE parameter for diff erent ecosystems. The use of algorithms based on satellite images plays an important role for understanding the temporal and spatial behavior of the biophysical parameters in a region where most of the information are generated locally. The data obtained can be used to feed surface models coupled to general circulation models, allowing, among others, the evaluation of the impact, both in regional and global scales, caused by land use/land cover changes. |
